My cousin Kimberley got married earlier this summer and she and her husband live in an apartment on the other side of town. They are trying to save up their money so that they can buy a house next year, so Kimmy has been even more diligent than ever with recycling and reusing anything she can.
There seems to be nothing as exciting as when we haul out the Christmas decorations and start to make the house look festive in December. We have a unique storage system for our decorations. We’ve taken ordinary sturdy cardboard boxes with lids and have covered them in bright fabrics. Each box has its own ribbon that fits around the box both ways, with enough length to tie a bow.
I like to make presents for people. This year I’m going to make a present for everyone. Mom said if I make one for each person, they can go on the table for the Christmas dinner decoration instead of buying Christmas crackers.
Anyone who has ever had kids will eventually end up with a pair of skates that are so worn they cannot be passed down any more. I have given a couple of pairs of skates a new job as a boot scraper at our doors. It’s pretty easy to do if you’ve got a couple of basic tools.
Someone shared some terrible pictures on facebook of animals that have been caught in those awful plastic six pack rings that drinks in aluminum cans are sold with.
I’ve never thought of Daphne as a baker, but when she hosted girls’ night last week, her treat was ice cream served up in custom-baked cookie bowls. They had a wonderful perfect bowl shape and we wondered how she managed it. We were all surprised by her secret. She rolled out her cookie dough as usual, but then used a larger jar lid to cut out the rounds. Then she just turned her muffin tin upside down and formed the the cookies over the muffin holes instead of inside them. I’ve tried making cookie bowls inside muffin tins before, and they are always too thick and don’t form up nicely. These looked like they’d come straight out of a bakery and were just right for holding a serving of ice cream!
I hate to waste anything, so even when stuff is broken beyond repair, I try to salvage anything on that item that might possibly be useful somewhere else.
I hate to see anything go to waste, so I’ve convinced the grandkids to use electric lights in their Jack-o-lanterns instead of candles (which leave the inside of the pumpkin black (and smelly). My eldest grandson told me that he got a string of outdoor LED Christmas lights which he intends on using with the pumpkins they carve this year. He’ll make a hole in the back of each pumpkin and arrange them on the steps with the lights inside each one to make them glow. That way, after halloween is over, they can bring me their pumpkins and I can make them into Pumpkin Puree to freeze for using in pies and soup later. Here are the recipes for making the puree, pumpkin pie and my favourite, pumpkin soup.
