Date Night - Street Performer's Festival

As much as I like to be imaginative when it comes to Date Night, sometimes it is just foolish not to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that come available for a short period of time. Sometimes a concert will come to town or some entertainment that you just don’t want to miss.

In our city, there are so many opportunities to take in local talent and entertainment, especially in the summer months, I can’t help but take advantage of the smorgasbord of choices.

This year I decided to work in the Street Performer’s Festival for Date Night.

The festival is held in the heart of downtown and there is a carnival-like atmosphere with  food, crafts and booths set up in the area. They are always fun to browse between the performers.

The whole point of Date Night is for my Queen and I is to spend some quality time together, so we usually walk to the festival after supper. The great thing about the street performers is that the performances are free to everyone, so even if you are on a limited budget you can still watch.

But just because I like to watch my pennies doesn’t mean that I don’t want to pay my fair share so I make sure I have a pocket full of loonies and toonies for when the “hat gets passed”. The “passed hat” is the way the performers make their living so even if you can only afford a small amount, they gratefully accept your offerings. It’s great entertainment for not a lot of money.

There are jugglers, artists, contortionists, dancers, unicyclists, magicians, story-tellers, musicians and comedians (or any combination of the above) all doing their little 15 minute gigs in the park with a circle audience.  Almost all of them have a little comedy worked into their routine, so you can’t help but have a good time. You can watch as many or as few of the entertainers as you like and go home when you’ve had enough, or you’re out of toonies.

I know my Queen and I enjoyed the evening as it was full of laughs and there’s nothing better than the walk back home with a smile on our faces as we rehash our favourite performers.
