Direction makes a difference:

Choosing an apartment that faces south or west will be much warmer both summer and winter than an apartment that faces north or east. Also, if you want to grow vegetables or plants on your balcony, many varieties will not do well with a northern exposure.

Colour also matters:

A dark coloured roof or siding absorbs heat while a light coloured roof or siding reflects heat. Colder climates should use darker colours to take advantage of the sun’s strength, while warmer climates should take advantage of lighter colours to reduce their air conditioning costs.
